Heritage Conservation

The purpose of conservation planning for heritage places is to ensure that they are cared for so that their meaning and importance is conserved for present and future generations. The conservation planning process provides a structured and informed approach to the management of heritage places.

The planning process we follow firstly assesses how and why the heritage places are significant, then we provide guidance on how they should be managed in order to conserve that significance. Effective conservation of historic heritage is concerned with the successful management of change. Changes occur due to natural decay processes and human induced processes. Conserving the heritage values is a fundamental goal of any plan, while recognising that some change over time is inevitable. The management of heritage places also needs to conserve and enhance their heritage value while responding to the requirements of present and future use of the place [1].

The InSitu Heritage team have been developing and writing conservation plans specifically tailored to the care of large earthwork archaeological sites such as pā and redoubts as well as complex historic sites for over thirty years. We’ve prepared plans for many iconic heritage places ranging from Kororipo Pā at Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, the Denniston coal mining settlement near Buller on the West Coast, to Hakapureirei sand dune archaeological sites on the south-western coast of Southland, and all points in between.
